BiblioTech – the First Bookless Public Library in Texas

BiblioTech

Come Fall 2013, a new library will be opened in Bexar County, Texas, providing visitors with a bank of e-Readers for borrowing e-books … obviously books of the traditional paper variety will be glaringly absent.  This project marks the first public library to be built as an all-digital service and just to make sure library-goers are in no doubt that it’s the 21st century, the interior will feature a design influenced by Apple retail stores.

The library, known as the BiblioTech, was announced by Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. Inspired while reading Apple founder Steve Job’s biography, Wolff said he envisions several bookless libraries around the county, including in far-flung suburbs. “It’s not a replacement for the (city) library system, it’s an enhancement,” Wolff said.

‘Green’ Library in a ‘Cube’

Lib exterior

The new University of Aberdeen Library was designed by Danish architects schmidt hammer lassen, to provide a 21st century learning and research environment for students, University staff, visitors and the public.

It conceptualizes the shape of a cube evoking the ice and light of the North, expanding over eight levels, around an asymmetrical atrium offering spectacular views over the city of Aberdeen and across the North Sea.

With a vast collection of over a million of books and providing an advanced learning environment, its best achievement in the design is the ‘Green’ effort in using photo-voltaic  cells  to supplement the building’s electricity requirements. A water recycling system to collect rain water for the use in lavatories.

Social Media Statistics for 2012

Can you survive without Facebook, Twitter, Youtube or Google?  I bet not, especially with Google and Youtube.  Although as librarians, we have always been advocating to our users and students that Google is not the “almighty” search engine and placing a lot of emphasis on the difference between “high recall” vs “high precision”, I can safely claim on behalf of all librarians that Google (and Youtube) are still good tools that we can’t live without and that this will continue to be so for quite some time to come.

So how much growth have you and I contributed to the world of social media for the year of 2012?  Check out this set of statistics compiled by Go-Globe.com: Continue reading
